What is a ship name?
In fandom, “shipping” (from relationship) means wanting two characters — or celebrities — to be a couple. A ship name is the blended name for that pairing.
A short history
Fans have been pairing characters for decades. Star Trek fan fiction in the 1970s wrote pairings as Kirk/Spock, which is where the “slash” format comes from. The word “shipper” took off in the 1990s around The X-Files, and blended ship names like Drarry (Draco + Harry) and Klaine (Kurt + Blaine) became the norm on fan forums, Tumblr and later TikTok.
Ship name formats
- Blend: Klaine, Stydia, Bughead
- Slash: Kirk/Spock — common in fan fiction tags
- “x” format: Kirk x Spock — common on social media
Our generator gives you all three. Switch to the Fandom formats tab for slash and x versions ready to paste into AO3 tags or a bio.

Frequently asked questions
What does ship mean?
“Ship” is short for relationship. To ship two people is to want them together. A “shipper” is a fan who supports a pairing, and the pairing itself is “the ship”.
How are ship names made?
Usually by blending the start of one name with the end of the other (Draco + Harry = Drarry), joining on a shared sound when possible. Our generator tries every join and ranks the ones that are easiest to say.
What’s the difference between Kirk/Spock and Kirk x Spock?
Both describe the same pairing. The slash format comes from 1970s fan fiction and is still used in archive tags; the “x” format is more common in social media posts and fan art captions.
Can I make a ship name for three characters?
Yes — use the main name combiner, which blends up to six names and tries every order. Fandoms often call these OT3 ships.
