What “ship” means
“Ship” is short for relationship. To “ship” two people is to want them to be a couple — whether they’re fictional characters, celebrities or your friends. A shipper supports a pairing, and the pairing itself is called a ship. A ship name is the blended name fans give that pairing.
Where shipping came from
Fans were pairing characters long before the word existed. In 1970s Star Trek fan fiction, writers labeled pairings with a slash — Kirk/Spock — and “slash fiction” became the name for that genre. The word “shipper” emerged in the mid-1990s in online communities around The X-Files, where fans debated whether Mulder and Scully should get together. Blended ship names spread through forums, LiveJournal and Tumblr, and today they trend on TikTok.
Ship name formats
- Blends: Drarry (Draco + Harry), Klaine (Kurt + Blaine), Bughead (Betty Cooper + Jughead), Stydia (Stiles + Lydia).
- Slash: Kirk/Spock — still standard in fan fiction archive tags.
- “x” format: Kirk x Spock — common in social posts and fan art captions.

How to make a good ship name
Ship names follow the same rules as celebrity couple names: join on a shared sound, keep the shorter name mostly whole, and choose the order that gives the nicer ending. Our ship name generator does this for any pairing and gives you the slash and x formats too. For OT3s, use the main combiner with three names.
